How
my student-athlete experience prepared me for where I am today
"We
had only one winning season out of the four I played. I learned
how to struggle with adversity."
My
most memorable moment as a University of Chicago athlete
"After one season, Coach Nels Norgren sat the
whole team down in the locker room and asked how our commitment
to basketball (time spent in practices and at games, and travel
to away games) had affected our ability to meet the demands on us
scholastically. Specifically, did we have too many games? Did we
have enough time for our studies? Did we have any suggestions for
scheduling opponents in the year ahead? Any changes in practice
times to help our schedules for practice? All that 'moment'
was memorable."
Memories
of being a student-athlete I would like to share
"I'll pass on this one: I had lots of great
experiences and friendships that carry over today, even though I
live on the West Coast and don't see my old teammates often enough."
What
I am doing today, and how I got there
"Today I'm in my 18th year of retirement from
corporate life, and it's the best and most fulfilling period I have
ever experienced. A loving wife, five great children, 18 grandchildren,
3.5 great-grand children. I'm stimulated and active in civic affairs,
community service and, with my wife, enjoying the interface with
our family as they mature into adulthood. I got here with a lot
of good luck, hard work and dedication to goals - sort of like
athletics at the University of Chicago!" |
