My
most memorable moment as a University of Chicago athlete
"My most memorable moment was playing basketball
before 9,000 Chicago stadium fans in 1944 against DePaul and George
Mikan. Our little team had never seen anybody as good or as big
as Mikan. We played our normal man-to-man defense of two guards,
two fowards, and a center, but as soon as they got the ball inside
to Mikan, which is all they wanted to do, we left our men and crashed
in on him, swatting at the ball. He complained about it, but it
was our only hope. I was the second highest scorer on our team with
a whopping seven points. Pretty good, huh? Mikan scored 27 for them."
