How
my student-athlete experience prepared me for where I am today
"I
learned the value and necessity of teamwork. Also, persistence,
practice, and sportsmanship. Physical fitness and an appreciation
of and respect for coaches and others in 'teaching' capacity
also helped prepare me."
My
most memorable moment as a University of Chicago athlete
"I was asked to pitch in a losing effort in a
game up on the northwest side of Chicago somewhere. I wasn't a pitcher. Getting my letter sweater was also memorable."
Memories
of being a student-athlete I would like to share
"There's no other way to play or practice than 'all-out,
all-the-time". Have fun playing. If you keep working, you will get better. It's valuable to teach your teammates, but always with
respect. Encouragement and recognition of effort (regardless of
outcome) is invaluable and the most effective method of obtaining
a cohesive, enthusiastic team. Value each team member for what he
or she contributes - don't ask for or expect what is impossible. Remember
that the reason you're at U of C is to obtain an education. Classes,
homework, etc. come first, sports second."
What
I am doing today, and how I got there
"I'm mostly retired, but still enjoy working occasionally
in student health at Colorado School of Mines. Sports have been
and continue to be a very important and fulfilling part of my life.
My Chicago experience was just one chapter of a very long and involved
book, but as my first experience wih formal, organized women's
sports (none existed in my Florida high school), a very important
and formative experience. I am grateful for it. I continue to participate
in sports. When I hit 50, I discovered the wonders of senior sports.
I played softball and volleyball and still do road bike racing,
and throwing events in track and field. I was the national champ
in weight pentathlon in my age group three years ago. I also started
a senior women's basketball league in the Denver area. We had five
teams qualify for the National Senior Games in Pittsburgh last summer." |
