My most memorable moment as a University of Chicago athlete
"Basketball furnished me with many good teammate role models. I particularly remember Billy Lester and Dick Rowland whom I admired both on and off the court, and of course coach Joe Stampf. Yet I loved every minute of it- especially traveling around the Midwest with my teammates to play colleges such as Ripon, Knox, Grinnell, and Hanover. I was very proud to become a member of the Order of the C in my last year of competition."

Memories of being a student-athlete I would like to share
"I did not see myself as a "student-athlete", but as a student who happened to play varsity basketball. I was grateful to the University for bringing me there on an academic scholarship from an inner-city Chicago public school. Yet, in subtle ways basketball did furnish me with confidence that hard work would enable me to improve and compete. I never had the chance to play high school basketball, but I found that eventually I could compete with players who in some cases had been all-state high school players."

What I am doing today, and how I got there
"I have been a college history teacher for 39 years now. History was easy for me, since I had a talent for it. Basketball was very hard since I had relatively little talent for it and was really a mediocre player who never scored more than 11 points in a single game."
