Wrestling / 157 pounds / Freshman / Westfield, N.J.
Major: Common Year
Steve Bonsall is a freshman on the UChicago wrestling team. Bonsall earned All-American status at the NCAA Division III Championships, placing eighth at 157 pounds. He led the team in victories with a 33-14 record on the season.
Head Coach Leo Kocher: "Steve's makeup includes a positive attitude, a strong work ethic and a great competitive heart. All three of those components came into play in his All-American performance at the NCAA Championships – far above where he was ranked to finish. Only three wrestlers in UChicago history have made it to the podium as freshmen, and now Steve has taken the first and toughest step to being a four-time All-American."
Teammate Nicholas DiNapoli: "Steve has really emerged as a breakout star among the freshman class this year. His tremendous work ethic and attention to Coach Kocher's style of wrestling have helped him develop a strong technical foundation, but his positive attitude and love for the sport are what make him a fierce competitor. Bonsall makes everyone around him a better wrestler and has been an excellent teammate on and off the mat. His phenomenal performance at nationals validated the hard work and dedication that he maintained all season long. As a team, we will look to build off of Bonsall's All-American finish to get more wrestlers on the podium next year, but I am really excited to see what Steve accomplishes over the next three years."
