Men's Track & Field / Pole Vault / Senior / Orinda, Calif.
Majors: Anthropology and Biological Sciences
Nathan Downey is a senior pole vaulter for the UChicago men's track and field team. At last Saturday's Windy City Rumble, Downey made his season debut in the pole vault. He came away with the win and a top height of 4.56 meters.
Head Coach Chris Hall: "Nate has been dealing with a number of injury problems so far this season. He had a really outstanding indoor in 2017, but during the outdoor season in the pole vault, he came down from an attempt in the plant box and badly sprained both ankles. The sprains were so severe he was unable to participate for the remainder of the outdoor season. The injury followed him into the fall where he was very limited in practice and had to sit out the first two meets of our winter season. This weekend, Nate made his return in the pole vault (after qualifying to the NCAAs last winter) with a victory at the Windy City Rumble. His height this weekend currently places him second in the UAA by just 2 cm behind first place. Nate is an integral part of our program - not just because of the way he competes, but because of his leadership and the fact that he really is a team-first athlete. His teammates really responded to the way he performed this weekend and rallied behind the performance."
Teammate Jacob Amiri: "It was great to see Nathan competing on Saturday. He's been battling some nagging injuries but despite that, he was able to have an awesome day vaulting. Nathan is a huge personality on our team and seeing him clear some heights really got the rest of us fired up to compete."
