Women's Track & Field / Middle Distance / Freshman / Raleigh, N.C.
Sophie Elgamal is a first-year middle distance runner for the Maroon women's track and field team. Last Saturday at the Windy City Rumble, Elgamal ran her first collegiate 3,000 meters and took second place in a time of 10:26.34.
Head Coach Chris Hall: "Sophie is a really nice story. She is a first-year on our team that had a down senior year in high school followed by a really rough fall in cross country. This fall, she was preparing for her first race (warming up) when she stepped in a hole that badly turned her ankle. It took her out of her first collegiate season completely, but she continued to work hard via cross training and came into the indoor track season in perhaps her best fitness ever. In her first meet of the season, she had a very nice mile, placing second overall and then immediately afterward got hit by the flu. It took her out of our next two meets. This weekend in her first 3K at the collegiate level, she placed second overall and her time of 10:26 was the second-fastest ever recorded by a UChicago first-year. I was truly impressed by the way she approached the race. She had a really nice group of teammates with her throughout, but Sophie was willing to take her turn at the front of the pack of her teammates at anytime the pace slowed and she closed extremely well over the 400 meters."
Teammate Megan Verner-Crist: "Sophie was injured for most of the cross country season, and so we hadn't really been seen her race until this track season. Since track began, she has blown us all away with her performances, especially in the mile and the 3K last week. Watching her close out her races has been a lot of fun, and her times so far are impressive. But beyond her racing, Sophie is a great addition to the team. She brings a smile and attitude to every workout, and is always ready to push herself."
