Ground Rules and Team Responsibilities for 12" and 16" Softball

TEAM RESPONSIBILITIES

1. Teams must pick up their at the IM Office, Ratner Center Rm 139 (look into the literature files on the wall for the selected sport, please take only your highlighted team name schedule)
2. Read the softball rules below.
3. Bats, balls, and bases will be brought from the IM office.
4. Rainouts will not be rescheduled.

GROUND RULES

Sec 1. Teams may field as few as seven (7) players and not forfeit. The playing field is nine (9) players unless both teams mutually agree (10). If ten players are used, five players must be female for coed.

Sec 2. Coed teams must field at least equal number of females and males (or one more male than female) and their batting order does not have to be alternating female/male but all females must bat.

Sec 3. Teams may, if they wish, announce previous to the start of the game that they wish to use an extended line-up. This allows them to have a batting order of up to 15 players who may freely substitute in the field. All non-conflicting rules still apply.

Sec 4. Each team, regardless of the number of players they field, must field a pitcher and a catcher.

Sec 5. The home team (first listed on the schedule) will be responsible for making calls on first and third bases. The away team (second listed) will be responsible for calls on second and home. A team must designate only one person responsible for this duty. This may not change throughout the game.

Sec 6. Each batter will begin with a one ball and one strike count.

Sec 7. Any batter who, in the process of making contact and the ball subsequently being batted into fair territory, steps on the plate, that batter shall immediately be called out. The ball is dead and no runner may advance except as forced.

Sec 9. NO CONTACT RULE. There is to be no contact on the base paths. If there is play being made on a runner at a base and that runner does not slide in order to minimize contact, and in the responsible base call representative's opinion significant contact was made, the runner shall be called out. The ball otherwise remains live unless said contact has caused injury, which results in a dead ball.

Sec 10. Additions to Sec. 5.
a. If any team is leading by 10 or more runs after 5 full innings or any home team leads by 10 or more runs in their half of the fifth, the game is called by the slaughter rule.

Sec 11. When the pitcher is on the rubber with the ball, all runners must be on their basis. If when the ball is legally pitched, a runner is in violation, he must return to that base before advancing to the next base. If a runner fails to do so, he is out upon appeal by the defensive team.
