damage the walls.
- Chalking on Campus
Student groups may chalk on sidewalks on campus to promote their events.
- When chalking, please use water-soluble chalk that can be washed away
by rain.
- Groups may not chalk on buildings, stairwells, or steps, on the Quadrangle
flagpole, or on anything other than sidewalks. There is no need to get
permission to chalk.
- Clubs may not advertise alcohol or drugs as a part of membership,
review University of Chicago Alcohol Policy.
ADVERTISEMENT RESOURCES
Good advertising and promotion can be the key to a well-attended and
successful event. Clubs can increase attendance and awareness of your
organization through these venues.
Campus and Community Papers
An obvious publicity route (besides posters) is advertising in campus
newspapers. Local newspapers also provide easy free publicity in the
form of regularly published calendars of events. Deadlines for these
calendars is crucial: if you plan an event on a Tuesday, you must alert
the Hyde Park Herald almost two weeks in advance, the Chronicle up to
three-and-a half weeks beforehand, and the Evergreen up to five weeks
in advance, depending on when the event happens.
- This requires some advance planning.
- Chicago Maroon: calendar every week; email maroon@uchicago.edu a week
in advance.
- Chicago Weekly News: calendar every Thursday; email cwn@uchicago.edu
or drop off info in RC 001 a week in advance.
- Chronicle: calendar every other Thursday; email chronicle@uchicago.edu
two weeks (or more) in advance.
- Free Press: monthly calendar; email arnewma@midway.uchicago.edu or
drop off info in RC 001 one week in advance.
- Hyde Park Herald: calendar every Wednesday; email hpherald@aol.com
or fax 773-643-8542 a week in advance.
- Co-op Markets Evergreen: calendar first Wednesday of the month; email
coopmarkets@coopmarkets.com or fax 773-667-8719 a week in advance.
If you want to reach a larger audience (and enhance your publicity
around Hyde Park, too) try hitting the Chicago-wide periodicals. The two
main weeklies for listings are the New City (Wednesdays) and the Reader
(Thursdays).
- Chicago Reader: fax 312/828-9926
- New City: fax 312/243-8802
- For both the Reader and the New City, send listings at least 2-3 weeks
before you want them to appear in the paper. Provide the general category
of the event (book reading, film, art, music genre, etc.); the name
of the event with speakers/bands included; location and room number
and the price of admission (or indicate if it's free). NOTE: if you
have a special price for U of C students only, but not students generally,
do not mention the "student" price in non-campus media - it
confuses everyone. Chicago Tribune or the Sun-Times via a press release.
