ELIGIBILITY
University of Chicago students are eligible to participate in Intramural activities. Refer to the 2007-2008 Office of Intramural, Recreation and Sport Clubs Guidelines for further clarification on eligibility. All students must complete an Assumption of Risk Agreement and Release form.

REGISTRATION

  1. On-Line Registration: http://athletics.uchicago.edu - Intramural/Sport Clubs Select desired sport - Complete entry form, select league, division, team name, manager and officials information, team roster with ID numbers, then submit. NOTE: Online registration only secures your spot for twenty-four hours from date and time of electronic submission. .
  2. Intramural Sports Office - Ratner Athletic Center, Rm 139 Entry Form- Pick up an Official Entry Form. Complete entry form with name of the sport, league choices(s), division classification, name of your team, team manager's name, e-mail, phone number.
    Select Team Officials- Teams will be required to list two names, ID #, and email address for each team members that will be designated to officiate. These individuals WILL be paid and required to officiate games each week, as necessary.
    Team Roster- List all players names, ID #'s, and e-mail of all the members of your team. Players may be added on site or on line. The minimum names accepted to validate your team entry form is seven. Teams will not be placed within a league without entry form and roster with Student IDs to the Office of Intramural, Recreation, Sport Clubs in the Gerald Ratner Center, Room 139. Attend Mandatory Manager and Officials Meeting- The team manager or alternate must attend the mandatory manager's meetings to acquire rules and schedules.

ENTRY FEE AND FORM
All participants will pay nonrefundable $2.00/entry-singles, $4.00/entry- doubles. Participants will not be placed within the tournament if the entry form and fees have not been paid to the Office of Intramural Sports in the Gerald Ratner Center, Rm 139. Individuals will have twenty four (24) hours from the time of on-line registration to pay the entry fee. Failure to pay will remove the individual(s) from the desired tournament.

SCHEDULES
Schedules will be posted outside the IM Office (Ratner Center, Room 139) on Friday, April 4, 2008, after 12:00 p.m.

TOURNAMENT FORMAT
The following divisions will be offered: Men's & Women's singles/doubles (including Coed); and TEAM tennis. (For team Tennis Information see next column.) A round robin or single elimination tournament will be played in Men and Women's singles divisions. For the singles and doubles competition, the NTRP National Tennis Rating Program 3.5 and below or 4.0 and above will be used to equalize competition. The NTRP classification system is on the opposite side for players to determine which category to choose.

TEAM TENNIS
This option will be offered to groups of individuals who wish to play as individuals yet move through a tournament as a team. A team will be comprised of two singles player and one doubles team. Players will compete against other players representing their team throughout the tournament. Teams that win 2 out of 3 (1st/2nd singles and doubles) will advance.

COURT AND EQUIPMENT INFORMATION
Courts to be used are next to Stagg Field on 56th and Cottage Grove, or those next to the Regenstein Library on 57th and Ellis. Opponents should provide new tennis balls. One can of balls will be opened for the match. The winner advances with the unopened can, the loser keeping the opened can. Balls can be purchased at HCFH Office or Ratner Front Desk for $4.00/can.

SCORING
All matches will be regular scoring (ad scoring). The first player to win 10 games is the winner of the match. At 9-9 in games a 13-point tiebreaker will be played. If players agree and time permits, a 2 of 3 set formats may be played.

REPORTING SCORES
At the conclusion of your matches, the WINNER is required to submit the scores to the Intramural, Recreation, and Sport Club office. Submission can be done on line through the Score Reporting listed on this page or you may stop by the office, Ratner Center, Rm 139 and complete the Score Reporting Card and submit to the Intramural Sports office personnel.

FORFEIT POLICY
If an opponent does not show up within five (5) minutes after the agreed playing time a forfeit will be declared.

SKILL RATING CATEGORIES
4.0 This player is just starting to play tennis. This player can sustain a rally of slow pace with other players of the same ability. This player has achieved improved stroke dependability and direction on moderate shots, but still lacks depth and variety.
5.0 This player is consistent when hitting medium paced shots, but is not comfortable with all strokes and lacks control when trying for directional intent, depth, or power.
6.0 This player has dependable strokes, including directional intent and depth on both forehand and backhand sides on moderate shots, plus the ability to use lobs, overheads, approach shots and volleys with some success. This player occasionally forces errors when serving and teamwork in doubles is evident.

ALCOHOL AND SPORTSMANSHIP POLICY
No alcohol is to be consumed before or during participation, or brought onto the playing area, or fields. The Office of Recreation believes that participation in recreational sports is a positive healthy experience that provides enjoyment to participants and alcohol use can hinder good sportsmanship. To foster health benefits and maximize enjoyment for participants and student staff, consuming alcoholic beverages before participation is a violation of recreation policy. Individuals, teams or spectators who violate this policy will not be eligible to participate and could face additional sanctions. All participants and spectators are expected and required to conduct themselves as sportsmanlike individuals and to treat others, as you would like to be treated.

AWARDS
Intramural Championship T-Shirts will be awarded to the winners of each division.
