Chris Hall begins his ninth season as the University of Chicago's head coach for men’s and women’s cross country and track & field in 2009-10. During his career, Hall's teams have become recognized as among the most competitive in the NCAA Division III.
Since Hall's arrival at Chicago in the fall of 2001, his teams have captured five University Athletic Association titles (men's cross country in 2002 and 2004; men's indoor track & field in 2002 and 2008; women's indoor track & field in 2008), made four NCAA Division III team postseason appearances (men's cross country in 2004 and 2005; women's cross country in 2003 and 2006), and have notched four national top-ten finishes (women's outdoor track & field - 7th in 2006; men's outdoor track & field - 8th in 2004; men's cross country - 9th in 2005; and women's outdoor track & field - 10th in 2008).
Hall’s men’s cross country teams have featured two All-Americans and 23 All-UAA performers since 2001, while the women have boasted four All-Americans and 15 All-UAA runners.
In track & field, Hall’s men’s teams have produced two NCAA Division III individual champions, 19 All-Americans, 37 national qualifiers, and 45 UAA champions. During that time, the women’s teams have featured 16 All-Americans, 34 national qualifiers, and 50 UAA champions.
Hall has also overseen a significant growth in his team in terms of numbers and quality. Upon his arrival at Chicago in 2001, the women's cross country/track & field squads finished last in the UAA with approximately 20 athletes. Within five years the team numbered about 50 and was ranked as high as seventh in the country. The men's teams have been consistently ranked among the top-20 each year.
The Midwest Region Coach of the Year in cross country and indoor track & field in 2004, Hall has also been part of the UAA Coaching Staff of the Year on five occasions. He currently serves as the Midwest Region representative and is the vice-president of the NCAA Division III track and cross country coaches association.
Hall arrived at Chicago after serving as head men’s and women’s cross country coach and assistant track & field coach at the University of Wisconsin-Stout from 1992-2001. He was named the head men’s track & field coach prior to the 1995 season.
During his tenure at Wisconsin-Stout, Hall’s teams produced 28 All-Americans and two national champions. In 1996, Hall’s men’s outdoor track & field team finished fourth at the NCAA Division III Championship, marking the school’s best-ever national track & field finish. Also in 1996, he was chosen the Wisconsin Intercollegiate Athletic Conference Men’s Track Coach of the Year.
Prior to his appointment at UW-Stout, Hall served as assistant women’s cross country coach at the University of St. Thomas (Minn.) from 1991-92 and as assistant cross country and track & field coach at the University of Wisconsin-LaCrosse from 1989-91.
Hall was an All-American distance runner at UW-LaCrosse, where he earned bachelor’s and master’s degrees in kineselogy in 1989 and 1990, respectively.
