Nov. 13, 2007

Game week is finally here and the team is very excited to open up play in the 11th Annual Midway Classic this weekend!  We played our exhibition game at Northwestern last week and competed very well.  We lost by a score of 84-76, but I was definitely pleased with the way in which we battled our opponent from the Big 10.  It was a neat experience for our players and the fans who made it to the game.  Hopefully we will be able to use the game as a way to identify things that we need to improve upon and it will help us as we prepare for the season.

The Midway Classic, which is generously sponsored by the Hyde Park Bank, is always a fun and exciting way to start the season for our team and campus community.  The tournament starts off with a banquet on Friday night at Maggiano's downtown and includes nice gifts for the participants.  For our fans, there will be free pizza before our game on Saturday and there will be a raffle for students for the chance to win a Nintendo Wii gaming system.  All of these elements make for a great atmosphere surrounding our first games of the year.

We will open on Saturday at 6:00pm immediately following the season opener for the Chicago women's basketball team.  We will take on local rival Lake Forest, which is always a hard fought game.  On Sunday we will play either Ohio Wesleyan or Trinity (TX) in the championship game at 5:00pm or the consolation game at 1:00pm.  Hopefully you'll be able to come watch us play at 5:00pm!  You can get all of the information about the tournament at the Midway Classic web site, which will be up in the next couple of days and can be reached through our athletic department web site.

I have spoken with a number of people who are planning to be there for the tip off at 6:00pm Saturday.  I hope that you can join us as we try to get the 2007-08 basketball season off to a great start.

** As a reminder, as in past years there will be a reception in the Jay Berwangwer Trophy Room near the gym in between the women's and men's games on Saturday (around 4:45pm) for season ticket holders.  I encourage parents, alumni, and other friends with season passes to join us for some refreshments!

Take Care,
Mike McGrath
