Women
This past weekend was our final regular season meet of the indoor season as we competed in the first annual “Margaret Bradley Invitational” at home in Henry Crown Field House.
We named the meet after one of our former athletes who passed away in the summer of 2004 while hiking in the Grand Canyon. Margaret was an All-American in cross country in 1999 and a medical student in our Pritzker School of Medicine. She passed away from heat related issues and dehydration while attempting to rescue a companion. She has been missed by our teams and we hope that by naming the meet after Margaret her spirit will always be a part of our programs.
The meet itself was represented by 10 other schools and a great tune-up for our women as we continue to prepare for the UAA conference championships on March 7-8. We had 7 first place finishes in the 16 events contested and scored 169.33 points comfortably winning the meet by nearly 100 points (second place was 72.33). The first place finishes included: Stephanie Omueti in the 55 and 200 meter dashes, Cynthia Lin in the 400, Liz Lawton in the mile, the 4 x 400 meter relay, Claire Ray in the Shot Put and Appie Hirve in the Triple Jump. Appie’s mark in the triple jump broke her own school record and met an NCAA standard by leaping 11.52 meters (37-9.5) which currently puts her 5th on the national honor rolls. Our women are currently ranked 8thin the country as we get ready for the championship portion of the season.
The meet also marked the final home competition for our teams in Henry Crown Field House. Over the past four years they have competed 20 times in this historic facility. Our goal since this season began was to put ourselves into a position to contend for the UAA conference title. This meet was another step in that direction. The UAA championships will be hosted by Case Western University in Cleveland, Ohio, on March 7-8. As we look through the conference honor rolls it is clear that our goals are attainable with the primary contenders coming from Washington University and Emory.
It appears as though Case will be broadcasting the meet online at the following link: http://www.case.edu/athletics/varsity
