The Chicago Women’s Basketball team played three great halves of basketball over the weekend, but unfortunately it was only enough to earn a split in their two road UAA contests.

In Friday’s 60-56 loss at Brandeis the team watched a desperate Judges squad take control early in building a 13-point halftime advantage. The team did respond though coming out of the break in holding Brandeis to only a single field goal in the first 13 minutes of the half.

The Maroons would rattle off a 19-3 run to start the second stanza and take a three-point lead with 8:54 left to play. The teams would battle closely from there and despite not making a field goal over the game’s final five minutes, the Judges would connect on 10 of 14 free throws over that stretch to hold off the visiting Maroons.

Sunday’s game marked a return for the Maroons to NYU and a gym that has not been kind to them in the past, producing only one win in 20 trips to the Big Apple. Despite a valiant first half effort the Maroons again were staring at a sizable halftime deficit against the eighth-ranked team in the nation. That spread would quickly be trimmed as the Maroons would score on their first three possessions of the half to close the gap to one.

It would take until the 11:00 mark before the Maroons would eventually grab their first second half lead, but after sophomore Kaitlin Devaney’s layup produced the advantage the visitors would neve r trail again and held on for a 72-68 win. It was a game the Maroons needed to win to stay in the thick of the UAA race and gives the team momentum going into yet another road UAA weekend.

After a trip to Carnegie Mellon on Friday night, Chicago will travel to Rochester to take on the league leading and ninth-ranked Yellow Jackets.
