Maroons win sixth in a row;
Host Wash U for UAA championship Saturday

The Chicago Women’s Basketball team won both games over the weekend to put themselves in position to play for their first ever outright UAA championship.

Friday’s 84-64 win over NYU gave the Maroons their first ever season sweep of the Violets.

Chicago was able to follow up that win with a gritty 62-55 victory over Brandeis on Sunday. The Maroons trailed by eight at halftime, but battled back to close the gap early in the second half and ended up taking the lead for good with a 12-0 run that gave them their largest lead of the afternoon at 50-42. Freshmen Dana Kaplan and Karly Kasper combined for 10 of the team’s 12 points during that stretch.

The Maroons six-game winning streak has them sitting tied with Wash U for first place in the UAA standings. Chicago will welcome the Bears to the Windy City on Saturday for a 1 p.m. contest that will produce the league champion and hand out the league’s automatic berth to the NCAA Tournament.

I would like to encourage as many of you as possible to come to Ratner on Saturday for what should be an incredibly exciting atmosphere.

Our men’s basketball team is in the same position as the women and are tied with Wash U atop the league standings. We are expecting a full gym on Saturday so come early and stay late to support our men’s team who will tip-off right after our game.

Wash U is expected to bring a large contingent as well, and we would like to pack the place with maroon and ensure our home court advantage.

In addition to our Teamline broadcast that can be accessed at our web site, the game will also be broadcast live by D3hoops.com.

UPCOMING: Along with Saturday turning into a UAA championship game, it also marks the program’s Senior Day. Lori Tanaka, Nofi Mojidi, and Nicaya Rapier will all be honored and celebrated w ith a ceremony at halftime of the men’s game which will follow our 1 p.m. start. There will also be a reception in the Berwanger Room for the seniors of both teams following the men’s game.

MOJIDI RISES TO #2: Senior Nofi Mojidi moved into second place on the all-time scoring chart at Chicago with 1,327 career points.

PROVING THEIR DEPTH: Chicago’s roster features 10 different players that have scored in double figures, and seven of those players have been the team’s high scorer in at least one game. Also, five different Maroons have reached double figures in rebounds and six different players have been the team’s leading rebounder on at least one occasion.

HOLDING STRONG: Chicago’s defense leads the UAA both in points allowed and defensive field goal percentage. The Maroons have held four of its last seven opponents under 30% from the floor.

HOT SHOTS: Sophomores Molly Hackney and Anna Woods rank first and second in the UAA season in blocked shots…Junior Alex Leach scored a season high 19 points in Friday’s win over NYU…Sophomore Jamie Stinson leads the UAA in assists during conference play.
