The Chicago Women’s Basketball Team defeated Wash U 76-53 to end the Bears’ consecutive UAA title streak at 10 in a row in front of a packed Ratner Center crowd on Saturday afternoon.
The day was made even more special when the men also beat Wash U to capture the UAA championship, as well as the league’s automatic berth to the NCAA Tournament.
The Maroons used the home crowd and fed off its energy in storming out to a 22-6 early advantage. Though the score would never get out hand for most of the half, the Maroons used a late 8-0 run to go into the locker room with a 37-16 advantage at the half.
Wash U made a couple runs but the lead would never get below 16 and Chicago held on for the title-clinching win. You can read more about Saturday’s game in the Maroon article here.
The win gave the Maroons an automatic berth to the NCAA Tournament, which begins this Friday. Chicago will open up with St.Thomas (MN) who tied for a share of the MIAC title this year at 6 p.m.
If Chicago wins they will play the winner of Friday night’s other game between St. Norbert and UW-Stevens Point on Saturday at 7 p.m. All three games will be played at Berg Gymnasium on the campus of the University of Wisconsin-Stevens Point.

NOT GIVING IT AWAY: Chicago set a season low for turnovers with only eight; the Maroons also dished out 21 assists.
HOT AT THE RIGHT TIME: Halfway through the UAA slate, Chicago was sitting in fourth place and were three games behind the conference lead. Since then the Maroons have won seven straight to capture their second UAA title.
HOLDING STRONG: Chicago’s defense leads the UAA both in points allowed and defensive field goal percentage. Against Wash U, the Maroons held their eighth consecutive opponent under 35% shooting from the field.
