CHICAGO – The University of Chicago men's and women's basketball teams are both in action this week with four of the five games occurring at home inside the Ratner Athletics Center.
UChicago (2-0 record) is coming off a successful opening weekend at the McWilliams Classic, hosted by Washington University-St. Louis. The Maroons won their season opener 64-36 over No. 25-ranked Claremont-Mudd-Scripps on Friday. The next day, UChicago exploded for a school-record 113 points in a 30-point victory over Hanover College. The previous school record of 101 points was achieved during the 1985-86 and 1992-93 seasons. Freshman forward Taylor Lake (14.5 PPG / 6.0 RPG) and senior forward Britta Nordstrom (12.5 PPG / 6.0 PPG) were both named to the McWilliams Classic All-Tournament Team at the end of the weekend's games.
The Maroons play their home opener on Tuesday night versus Carroll University (0-3), then hit the road again on Sunday at Carthage College (2-1).
The Maroons (1-1 record) picked up their first win of the season on Saturday by a 78-68 score at Lake Forest College. UChicago never trailed in the game and junior forward Collin Barthel's 20 points established a new career high. Four of the five starters – Barthel, sophomore guard Noah Karras, junior forward Waller Perez and senior guard Tyler Howard – are currently averaging at least 14 points per game.
UChicago will play three home games this week, starting with a Tuesday matchup with Illinois Institute of Technology (0-1). The Maroons will then host a four-team tournament on Saturday and Sunday with Carroll University (2-0), DePauw University (0-2) and East-West University.
