UChicago Athletics Preview: Jan. 7

CHICAGO – The University of Chicago kicks off the new year at home with a trio of basketball and wrestling events this Saturday.

Women's Basketball

The Maroons (7-4 record) open up the conference season against No. 5-ranked Washington University-St. Louis (10-0). The eight schools in the University Athletic Association (UAA) have combined to post a 71-15 record (.826 winning percentage) in non-conference contests this season.

In the previous matchup between the two teams, UChicago closed out the 2015-16 season with a dominating 82-70 victory over the Bears. The Maroons set a new school record for field-goal percentage in a game by shooting 63.8 percent. Guard Elizabeth Nye led the way with 19 points.

Men's Basketball

UChicago (8-3 record) will play the second game of the UAA doubleheader versus No. 24-ranked Washington-St. Louis (8-3) at the Ratner Athletics Center. The Maroons have won four of the past six conference openers against the Bears.

On Monday, senior forward Blaine Crawford was picked as UAA Athlete of the Week. He has pulled down double-digit rebounds in six of the past eight games, averaging 11.2 per game in that time. Crawford has also shot at least 70 percent from the field seven times this season.

The Maroons will welcome six other teams to the Henry Crown Field House for the UChicago Duals. The participating squads include University of Dubuque, Manchester University, Milwaukee School of Engineering, Saint John's University, Trine University and Wabash College.

UChicago will face off with Trine in round two, Dubuque in round three and Manchester in round four.

Since the start of the 2013-14 season, UChicago owns a 10-6 home record in dual meets. The team currently has six wrestlers with double-digit victories this season, led by junior Nick Ferraro (16-4), freshman Steve Bonsall (14-5) and senior Michael Sepke (14-9).
