CHICAGO – A full weekend of home action highlights this week's University of Chicago athletic contests.
The University of Chicago basketball teams will be hosting their annual theme night on Friday, January 20. This year's theme features the return of Beach Night.
UChicago students and fans are encouraged to come out to the Ratner Athletics Center in their favorite tropical or beach themed outfits and cheer on the Maroons during their basketball doubleheader versus Brandeis University. Tip-off for the women's game is at 6:00 PM with the men's game to follow at 8:00 PM.
UChicago (9-5, 2-1 UAA) hosts its first University Athletic Association home weekend of the season. The Maroons start off with a Friday night game versus Brandeis University (10-4, 2-1 UAA) and wrap up with a Sunday afternoon contest against New York University (10-4, 0-3 UAA).
The Maroons are tied for the UAA lead in offensive rebounds (15.3 RPG) and top the UAA in steals (12.4 SPG). Senior forward Britta Nordstrom has raised her averages in conference play to 13.7 points, 7.7 rebounds, 2.3 assists and 2.3 steals per game. On the other side of the court, Brandeis leads the UAA in points against per game (52.7 PPG) and field-goal percentage against (32.8 percent). NYU has been without leading scorer Kaitlyn Read for the last six games and have gone 2-4 in those contests.
The Maroons (8-6, 0-3 UAA) looks to get back into the win column with a Friday evening game contest versus Brandeis (6-7, 2-1 UAA). They conclude the weekend on Sunday afternoon against New York University (6-7, 1-2 UAA).
UChicago is 8-2 in games when scoring at least 78 points, and the two losses were to nationally-ranked teams. The Maroons shot over 48 percent in all of those games, while shooting below 41 percent in their other four losses. The team has averaged 11.2 assists during their current losing streak, despite averaging 17 assists on the season. Brandeis plays the slowest pace in the UAA and leads the conference in free throws made and fouls drawn. NYU's offense is currently last in the UAA in field-goal percentage (40.8 percent).
UChicago takes on a pair of College Conference of Illinois & Wisconsin (CCIW) opponents on back-to-back days. The Maroons (4-1 record) matches up with Wheaton College (4-3) on Friday night, followed by a home dual versus Elmhurst College (5-2).
Last year, UChicago topped Wheaton 25-23 and lost to Elmhurst 37-12. Senior Paul Papoutsis (174 pounds), junior Devan Richter (125 pounds) and sophomore Louis Demarco (133 pounds) each earned victories. On Monday, sophomore Jason Lynch was named UAA Athlete of the Week after going 4-0 on the weekend at Elmhurst College's Al Hanke Invitational. Lynch captured the 184-pound bracket and has won seven-straight matches.

Indoor Track & Field
The Maroons hit the road for the first time this season, heading downstate to Illinois Wesleyan University for the I-55 Triangular on Saturday, alongside UAA rival Washington University-St. Louis.
UChicago dominated its season debut last Saturday as host of the Phoenix Invitational. The women won 10 events and the men captured seven victories on the day. Junior Khia Kurtenbach was UAA Women's Track Athlete of the Week. Kurtenbach won the one mile in 5:04.89 for a victory margin of more than 14 seconds. She was previously UAA Athlete of the Week twice during the cross country season.

Swimming & Diving
UChicago will honor its senior class as part of a tri-meet with DePauw University and Calvin College on Saturday. The Maroons will recognized seven women and three men before the Senior Day meet.
Last week, the Maroons were back in the pool for the first time since November and went a combined 3-3 in competition versus Lewis University, Olivet Nazarene University and University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee. UChicago's effort at Wisconsin-Milwaukee netted two new school records. Freshman Reona Yamaguchi won the men's 100-yard IM in 52.83 and senior Maya Scheidl was runner-up in the women's 100-yard IM in 1:01.51. Yamaguchi earned UAA Men's Swimmer of the Week thanks to four event victories over the weekend.
