UChicago Athletics Preview: Jan. 27-29

Women's Basketball

The Maroons (11-5, 4-1 UAA) aim to take sole possession of first place in the University Athletic Association (UAA) with a pair of conference road games this weekend. UChicago takes on Case Western Reserve University (10-6, 2-3 UAA) on Friday night, then co-leader Carnegie Mellon University (15-1, 4-1 UAA) on Sunday afternoon.

UChicago leads the UAA with 15.1 offensive rebounds per game while Carnegie Mellon (12.9) and Case Western Reserve (10.0) rank last in the league in that category. Sophomore forward Olariche Obi has led the charge on the glass. Over her past six games, Obi is averaging 8.2 rebounds and 1.8 blocks per game. Carnegie Mellon's Lisa Murphy is the top statistical player in the country, currently leading NCAA Division III in points (25.9 PPG) and field-goal percentage (82.2 percent). Case Western Reserve's Hillary Hellmann and Kara Hageman are averaging a combined 39.8 points per game while ranking third and fourth, respectively, in the UAA in scoring.

Men's Basketball

UChicago (10-6, 2-3 UAA) looks to continue its winning ways with a pair of road games at Case Western Reserve (5-11, 0-5 UAA) on Friday and Carnegie Mellon University (9-7, 3-2 UAA) on Sunday.

The Maroons won two-straight home games last weekend to snap a five-game losing streak. UChicago shot a combined 50 percent from the field in those games compared to 42.8 percent in the previous five contests. On the glass, the Maroons have outrebounded opponents in all but two games this season, with the other two resulting in a rebounding tie. Their +9.2 rebounding margin ranks 12th in NCAA Division III. Senior forward Blaine Crawford leads the way with 9.8 rebounds per game. Carnegie Mellon's Jack Serbin is averaging a double-double with 16.9 points and a UAA-high 11.9 rebounds per game. Case Western Reserve's T.J. Duckett is third in the league behind Crawford with 9.3 rebounds per game.

The Maroons make the short trip out to the suburbs for the annual Wheaton College Pete Willson Invitational on Friday and Saturday. One of the largest and oldest small-school wrestling tournaments in the country, this year's invite features 35 teams and has been contested since 1938.

At last year's Pete Willson Invite, UChicago finished 11th out of 32 teams. Devan Richter led the charge by finishing runner-up in the 125-pound bracket. He defeated the No. 1-ranked and eventual national champion Lucas Malmberg to reach the final. Nick Ferraro also secured a win of the fifth-ranked wrestler in NCAA Division III in that meet. Sophomore Jason Lynch is on a roll for the Maroons at 184 pounds, having won eight of his last nine matches with five technical falls.

Indoor Track & Field

UChicago will travel up to University of Wisconsin-Whitewater this weekend for a pair of meets on consecutive days. The men begin on Friday with the "Squig" Converse Invitational, followed by the women's Warhawk Classic Invitational on Saturday.

In last year's meets at Wisconsin-Whitewater, the Maroon women finished first overall thanks to five event wins. Michelle Dobbs topped the field as part of the 4x400-meter relay and in the 800 meters. UChicago's men received a victory from Timofey Karginov, who won the 5,000 meters by 6.42 seconds.

The Maroons have totaled 14 men's wins and 14 women's victories through the first two meets of the season. Khia Kurtenbach and Kelsey Dunn are undefeated so far in their long distance races.

Men's Tennis

The No. 5-ranked Maroons begin the 2017 portion of their schedule with a road matchup at No. 35-ranked Coe College on Saturday morning.

In last year's meeting, UChicago swept the Kohawks 9-0 with all the victories coming in straight sets. The Maroons have one dual match under their belts – a 7-2 home victory over Carthage College in September. Junior David Liu carries a team-leading 8-2 record in singles. He won the ITA Central Region singles championship in the fall and qualified for the ITA Oracle Cup. The doubles duo of senior Max Hawkins and freshman Tyler Raclin also claimed the ITA Central Region doubles title and took fifth place at the ITA Oracle Cup.

Women's Tennis

No. 10-ranked UChicago also kicks off the new year with a home contest against NCAA Division II opponent Lewis University on Saturday afternoon.

The two teams last met up in February 2015, and the Maroons came out as the victors by a 6-3 margin. UChicago took two out of three doubles and then four out of six singles. Tiffany Chen and Courtney Warren were both multiple winners on the day in both singles and doubles play. The women's team made an impressive showing at the ITA Central Region Championships back in October. Freshman Marjorie Antohi was the runner-up in singles and also took second place in doubles alongside freshman teammate Estefania Navarro.
