UChicago Athletics Preview: Feb. 8-12

Swimming & Diving

UChicago gears up to host the four-day 2017 University Athletic Association (UAA) Swimming & Diving Championships this Wednesday-Saturday. The Myers-McLoraine Pool will be the site of competition, with preliminaries scheduled in the morning and finals in the evenings.

At last year's UAAs, the Maroons women placed third out of the eight conference teams and the men took fourth. UChicago racked up six event titles and 17 All-UAA performers. Returning relay champions on the men's side include senior Jonathan Simoneau and sophomores Alexander Farrell and Keenan Novis. Sophomore Anna Girlich is the reigning UAA Women's Diver of the Year and junior Melissa Bischoff captured the 100-yard backstroke.

Women's Basketball

The Maroons (14-6, 7-2 UAA) concludes the home game portion of its schedule with a pair of UAA matchups this weekend. On Friday, University of Rochester (15-5, 6-3 UAA) comes to the Ratner Athletics Center, followed by Emory University (13-7, 4-5 UAA) on Sunday. The senior class will also be recognized before the beginning of Sunday's contest.

UChicago is tied atop the UAA standings, having won five of its last six. The defense has turned over opponents at a high rate, with 77 forced over the past three games. The Maroons have won those three contests by an average of 27 points. Senior forward Britta Nordstrom surpassed 1,000 career points over the weekend and has averaged 21 points per game over the past four on 67 percent shooting from the field.

Rochester has won four of its past five and lead the UAA in rebounding and field-goal percentage defense. Alexandra Leslie paces the team in points (22.1 PPG), rebounds (10.1 RPG), blocks (1.7 BPG), field-goal percentage (.564) and free-throw percentage (.843). Emory lost its previous two games and is led by Ashley Oldshue with 16.4 PPG, 7.3 RPG and a .554 field-goal percentage.

Men's Basketball

UChicago (12-8, 4-5 UAA) plays its final home games of the season on Friday against Rochester (19-1, 8-1 UAA) and on Sunday versus Emory (14-6, 5-4 UAA). Sunday will also be Senior Day, with pre-game recognition for the current senior class.

The Maroons average a UAA-high 83.1 points per game, which included 99 points in last Friday's win over Case Western Reserve University. Sophomore guard Noah Karras broke the school and UAA records with 11 three-pointers in the game en route to a career-high 39 points. Senior forward Blaine Crawford's .629 field-goal percentage ranks 17th in NCAA Division III.

Rochester has won six straight by an average of 26 points. Guards Mack Montague and Sam Borst-Smith average an identical 16.5 points per game, while Borst-Smith ranks fifth in the nation with three steals per game. Emory lost its past two games and are led in scoring by forward Adam Gigax at 19.6 PPG. Point guard Whit Rapp is third in the nation with 8.9 assists per game.

Indoor Track & Field

The Maroons make the short trip out to the western suburbs for the annual Chicagoland Indoor Championships, with the women competing on Friday and the men on Saturday at North Central College.

The crowded field features competition from all three divisions of the NCAA. UChicago's women took the team title out of 19 teams and the men placed sixth out of 21 squads. The Maroon women were boosted by five event victories in the 800 meters (Michelle Dobbs), one mile (Brianna Hickey), 3,000 meters (Madeleine Horvath), 5,000 meters (Khia Kurtenbach) and the 4x400-meter relay (Eleanor Kang, Emma Koether, Dobbs, Mikaela Hammel). The men captured a pair of third-place showings with Nick Nielsen in the one mile and the distance medley relay team of Owen Melia, Ben Clark, Jeremy Ferguson and Mitchell Booth.

UChicago pursues its 16th conference title this weekend at the UAA Wrestling Championship, hosted by New York University. The Maroons will take on Case Western Reserve University and defending champion NYU in a pair of dual matches.

The Maroons finished second at the 2016 UAAs with a 36-11 win over Case Western Reserve and a 22-16 loss to NYU. Four UChicago wrestlers were named All-UAA – Devan Richter (125 pounds), Mason Williams (141 pounds), Nick Ferraro (165 pounds) and Ryan Walsh (197 pounds). UChicago is coming off a 21-18 victory over No. 25-ranked Augustana College last Friday.
