UChicago Athletics Preview: March 3-5

Women's Basketball

After qualifying for the NCAA postseason on Monday, UChicago (18-7 record) will head north to St. Paul, Minn. for the four-team regional hosted by University of St. Thomas. The Maroons open up first-round action with Wartburg College (25-2) on Friday at 5:30 PM.

The other first-round game features St. Thomas (27-0) versus University of Wisconsin-Superior (23-4). The winners of the two games play each other on Saturday at 7:00 PM.

Women's Tennis

The No. 10-ranked Maroons (7-0 record) will face their toughest opposition of the season thus far when they compete at the ITA Division III National Team Indoor Championship this weekend. The eight-team field in seed order includes Emory University, Pomona-Pitzer Colleges, UChicago, Washington University-St. Louis, Carnegie Mellon University, Sewanee, Johns Hopkins University and University of Mary Washington. UChicago opens action on Friday versus the host, No. 13-ranked Sewanee.

The Maroons last competed at ITA Indoors in 2015, when they finished third thanks to a 6-3 win over Washington-St. Louis. The team previously took second place in 2010 and 2011, and has finished in the top three on five occasions.

Senior Tiffany Chen, sophomore Rachel Kim and freshmen Estefania Navarro and Alyssa Rudin are all riding six-match winning streaks in singles play.

Indoor Track & Field

UChicago looks to bolster its chances at qualifying for nationals with a pair of road meets this weekend. The Maroons head out to the Carthage College Invite on Friday and the University of Wisconsin-Stevens Point Pointer Final Qualifier on Saturday.

The Maroons are coming off a second-place women's showing and a third-place men's finish at the University Athletic Association (UAA) Indoor Championships. The women claimed three individual titles – freshman Alisha Harris in the long jump, junior Khia Kurtenbach in the 5,000 meters and sophomore Alexandra Thompson in the high jump. The men accounted for a quartet of championships with junior Nathan Downey (200 meters), junior Patrick LeFevre (55-meter hurdles), senior Temisan Osowa (55 meters) and freshman Alexander Scott (shot put).

The Maroons kick off their season schedule downstate with four neutral-site games at Lenz Field in Jacksonville, Ill. UChicago is set to play Lawrence University and Loras College on Saturday, followed by Elmhurst College and Illinois Wesleyan University on Sunday.

UChicago compiled an 18-19 overall record in 2016, which included a marked improvement on the mound. The Maroon pitching staff recorded a 4.63 team ERA, which was a full two runs lower than the previous year. Pitcher Joe Liberman returns for his sophomore campaign after posting a 1.99 ERA and a 4-2 record in nine appearances. Junior Michael Davis tallied four saves as the closer while also hitting .309 with three home runs and 20 RBI. Sophomore outfielder Josh Parks led the team with a .351 batting average and 12 stolen bases.
