UChicago Athletics Preview: April 7-9


UChicago (10-7 record) meets up with Washington University-St. Louis (13-6) for the first time in a decade this weekend. The two teams will play a four-game series this weekend with doubleheaders on Saturday and Sunday. The last time they played each other occurred on April 15, 2007.

Junior pitcher Molly Moran is striking out 1.2 batters per inning over her last six outings (23.1 innings). Offensively, sophomore outfielder Maeve Garvey (.531) and freshman outfielder Christie Ambrose (.524) are both batting over .500 with runners on base. UChicago is also stealing 2.9 bases per game this year compared to 1.6 by the opposition.

The Maroons (11-4 record) put their six-game winning streak on the line with a four-game home series with Finlandia University (3-15). They will square off with doubleheaders starting at Noon on Saturday and Sunday.

In last weekend's three-game sweep of University of Wisconsin-Superior, UChicago's pitchers only allowed one run in 23 innings. The Maroons struck out 20 batters versus only 16 hits allowed. Sophomore outfielder Connor Hickey and Josh Parks are tied for the team lead with seven multi-hit games each.

Track & Field

UChicago will make a short drive to the western suburbs for Saturday afternoon's outdoor meet at Wheaton College.

The Maroons kicked off the outdoor season last weekend by hosting the Ted Haydon Invitational. UChicago's women dominated with 11 event victories, topping the 14-team field. The men placed second of 14 squads with four wins. Freshman Mary Martin led the way with three victories in the 100 meters (12.72), the long jump (5.47 meters) and the 4x100-meter relay (49.02). Her efforts earned University Athletic Association (UAA) Women's Field Athlete of the Week honors on Monday.

Women's Tennis

The No. 8-ranked Maroons (9-3 record) look to defend their Midwest Invite title with a trio of matches this weekend in Madison, Wis. In 2016, UChicago defeated Carthage College 9-0, Kenyon College 5-2 and University of Wisconsin-Whitewater 5-3 to claim the team championship.

This year's Midwest Invite features 10 teams, and the Maroons start Friday with matches against No. 19-ranked Case Western Reserve University (12-2) and Augustana College (20-2). Sophomore Rachel Kim has swung the hot racket lately with nine wins in her past 10 singles matches.

Men's Tennis

No. 5-ranked UChicago (13-2 record) take on its 12th nationally-ranked opponent of the season with a neutral site dual on Sunday against No. 31-ranked Gustavus Adolphus College (19-7) in West Bend, Wis.

Over their spring break trip to California, the Maroons defeated three NESCAC opponents (Colby College, Tufts University, Williams College) by a combined score of 24-3. The previous times UChicago and Gustavus Adolphus played in 2016, the Maroons won 7-2 in the regular season and 5-2 in the third round of the NCAA postseason.
