UChicago Athletics Preview: April 26-30


UChicago (17-10 record) have four games on tap in Chicagoland. The Maroons head to the western suburbs for a Wednesday night game at Benedictine University (19-13), followed by a three-game home series versus Grinnell College (17-12) on the weekend.

Maximiliano Larsen has clubbed 14 doubles this year, which is tied for the seventh most in school history for a single season. Along with his 17 walks and four hit-by-pitches, the junior outfielder leads the team with a .526 on-base percentage. Over his last four pitching appearances, freshman pitcher Nate Hendley owns a 3.05 ERA with 16 strikeouts in 17.2 innings.

The Maroons (22-11 record) look to extend their six-game winning streak with four home games on the schedule this weekend. They host Kalamazoo College (12-18) on Saturday and Lawrence University (14-18) on Sunday.

Most recently, UChicago completed a four-game road sweep of Case Western Reserve University. Junior pitcher Molly Moran has won three-straight games and leads the staff with a .198 batting average against, while freshman pitcher Megan Stoppelman has won eight of her last nine decisions. Sophomore outfielder Maeve Garvey is riding a 10-game hitting streak and paces the squad with a .453 batting average and 17 extra-base hits.

Track & Field

The Maroons continue their outdoor season by heading to Indiana for the Valparaiso University Crusader Open on Saturday.

Last weekend, UChicago hosted the two-day University Athletic Association (UAA) Outdoor Track & Field Championships at Ted Haydon Track. The Maroon women placed second and men took fourth in the team standings.

Overall, UChicago captured seven event titles. The women's champions included freshman Laura Darcey in the long jump, junior Claire Costelloe in the 10,000 meters, junior Khia Kurtenbach in the 5,000 meters and junior Ade Ayoola in the high jump. The men's winners featured senior Andrew Maneval in the shot put and the discus, and junior Obinnaya Wamuo in the 400-meter hurdles.
