Three Maroons Capture UAA Athlete of the Week Honors After Opening Weekend

CHICAGO – With the opening weekend of the fall season in the books, three University of Chicago student-athletes were selected as University Athletic Association (UAA) Athletes of the Week on Tuesday.

Max Lopez was named the UAA Co-Offensive Player of the Week in the wake of his recent scoring binge. In a pair of home wins, the junior forward totaled three goals and one assist on Stagg Field's grass. He provided the game-winning goal in the final five minutes of a 2-1 win over Whitworth University on Friday. Lopez then followed up with two scores and an assist in a 4-0 shutout of Knox College on Monday. He fired off 12 shots during those matches.

The Maroons also swept the UAA Men's and Women's Cross Country AOW honors thanks to stand-out performances at Friday's University of St. Francis (Ill.) Invitational. In the women's 5K race, senior Khia Kurtenbach posted a runner-up finish out of 89 runners. She crossed the line in 17:37.1. UChicago's top placer on the men's side was freshman Ryan Cutter in his collegiate debut. Cutter ran a time of 15:29.3 on the 5K course to finish sixth out 113 participants. The Maroon women won the team title at the St. Francis invite for the third-straight year, while the men took second out of 13 teams.
