UChicago Athletics Preview: Sept. 5-10

Women's Soccer

No. 3-ranked UChicago (2-0 record) will make its home debut on Wednesday afternoon with a matchup against Concordia (Wis.) University (0-1-1). The Maroons then hit the road again, traveling to regional rival Illinois Wesleyan University (2-0) on Saturday.

UChicago picked up a pair of wins on its season-opening California trip. After taking down Claremont-Mudd-Scripps 3-1, the Maroons shut down No. 10-ranked Pomona-Pitzer by a 3-0 score line. The defense only surrendered eight total shots on the weekend and none on goal versus the Sagehens. Sophomore forward Adrianna Vera led the offense with a pair of goals.

Men's Soccer

No. 9-ranked Maroons (2-0 record) concludes its three-match home stand on Friday by hosting St. Norbert College (1-1), followed by a Saturday night road contest at No. 22-ranked Carthage College (2-0).

Max Lopez was the catalyst in the opening games, accounting for three of the team's six goals. He scored the game-winner in the final five minutes against Whitworth University and then added two more versus Knox College. He was named University Athletic Association (UAA) Athlete of the Week on Tuesday – his third career UAA weekly honor.

 

Cross Country

UChicago heads north for its second race of the year at the University of Wisconsin-Parkside Vic Godfrey Open on Saturday morning. The women's 5K is set to commence at 10:30 AM, followed by the men's 8K at 11:15 AM.

The Maroons impressed in their opener last Friday, as the women won the University of St. Francis Invitational for the third year in-a-row and the men finished second out of 13 teams. The women's squad placed eight runners in the top 14, led by senior Khia Kurtenbach's second-place showing. UChicago's men put eight runners in the top 15 and packed up effectively to sweep places eight through 13. Freshman Ryan Cutter was sixth overall and was named UAA Athlete of the Week alongside Kurtenbach.

Football

The Maroons (0-1 record) look to bounce back in week two as they take on rival Washington University-St. Louis (0-1) in a Saturday road contest.

UChicago dropped its first game of the season 34-14 to No. 22-ranked Case Western Reserve University. Defensively, the Maroons limited the Spartans to 55 rushing yards and only 1.3 yards per carry. Sophomore defensive end Ben Christensen totaled career highs of 10 tackles and three tackles for loss and also blocked an extra point. Freshman defensive tackle Jackson Ross made a big first impression with a team-high 12 tackles to go with 1.5 tackles for loss.

 

Volleyball

The Maroons are set to host the annual Gargoyle Classic on Saturday, with Carthage College (3-1) and Dominican University (2-3) coming to the Ratner Athletics Center.

UChicago went 3-1 at the Saint Mary's University Classic over the weekend, with three of the matches going a full five sets. Junior outside hitter Audrey Scrafford led the offense with 63 kills (3.50 per set) while hitting .291. Sophomore middle hitter Anne Marie Stifter is averaging 4.50 digs per set, which included a career-high 27 digs versus University of Wisconsin-Stout.
