UChicago Cleans Up With Six UAA and MWC Athletes of the Week

CHICAGO – Six University of Chicago student-athletes were picked as Athletes of the Week by the University Athletic Association (UAA) and Midwest Conference (MWC) on Monday.

On the gridiron, junior Jeremy Vincent was the Football Defensive Player of the Week for both the UAA and MWC. Vincent keyed a dominating effort from UChicago's defense in a 55-10 home win over Cornell College last Saturday. The safety hauled in two interceptions and made three tackles for a defensive unit that held the Rams 36 points under their season scoring average. Overall, UChicago forced eight turnovers in the game (four interceptions, four fumbles).

UChicago tennis was well represented among the UAA's Tennis Athletes of the Week. Sophomore Tyler Raclin, freshman Jeremy Yuan and freshman Claire Handa earned the honors after their triumphs at the Intercollegiate Tennis Association (ITA) Central Region Championships in Kalamazoo, Mich.

Raclin and Yuan teamed up to win the ITA regional title in men's doubles with a 6-0 record in a draw that featured 64 doubles teams. The duo stormed back from a one-set deficit to beat the final over conference rival Washington University – St. Louis 4-6, 7-5, 10-8. Raclin has now won two-straight ITA regional doubles titles.

Handa was the women's singles champion at ITAs with five-straight wins in the field of 128 players. The rookie defeated teammate and last year's ITA singles runner-up Marjorie Antohi by scores of 7-5, 7-6 (7-3).

The Maroon volleyball team caught fire at the UAA Round Robin #1 with big contributions from junior outside hitter Audrey Scrafford, who was the UAA Offensive Athlete of the Week. No. 25-ranked UChicago went 3-0 on the weekend in Cleveland, capping it off with a 3-1 victory over No. 3-ranked Emory University. Scrafford was the lead offensive force with 3.23 kills per set while hitting .278 overall. She posted 14 kills against University of Rochester and 13 more versus Emory.

Matthew Koh helped No. 1-ranked UChicago get off to a good start in conference play as the UAA Men's Soccer Offensive Athlete of the Week. The junior forward scored two goals with one assist – all within the opening 18 minutes – in a 4-1 win at University of Rochester on Saturday. He also tallied two assists in a 3-1 mid-week victory at Benedictine University.
