UChicago Athletics Preview: Jan. 8-14


No. 17-ranked UChicago (6-2 record) hosts Wheaton College (4-3) in a dual meet on Wednesday evening. The Maroons then travel to the suburbs for the Elmhurst College Invitational on Saturday.

Sophomore Kyle Peisker (174 pounds) is 11-2 so far this season. He has won eight-straight matches, averaging 15.7 points per match with five technical falls in that time. Sophomore Steve Bonsall (157 pounds) has emerged victorious in seven of his past eight matches and owns a 10-2 record on the year.

Swimming & Diving

The Maroons return to the Myers-McLoraine Pool for the first time since November when they take on Lewis University and Olivet Nazarene University in a tri-meet on Friday.

UChicago was last in action at the three-day Phoenix Fall Classic from Nov. 17-19, taking first of 12 teams on both the men's and women's sides. The squads compiled 31 NCAA B-cut marks, five new school records and two new pool records in the process.

Women's Basketball

No. 23-ranked UChicago (10-2 record, 1-0 UAA) enters its second weekend of University Athletic Association (UAA) action with hosting duties at the Ratner Athletics Center. The Maroons face off with New York University (8-4, 1-0 UAA) on Friday and Brandeis University (8-3, 0-1 UAA) on Sunday.

Last Saturday in the conference opener, UChicago upset No. 22-ranked Washington University – St. Louis 82-76 on the road. The Maroons made 10 three-pointers for the second-straight game and forced 25 turnovers. Sophomore forward Taylor Lake scored 23 points, made four of five three-pointers and swiped five steals.


Men's Basketball

The Maroons (4-8 record, 0-1 UAA) continue their UAA slate with a pair of home games against NYU (8-3, 1-0 UAA) on Friday night and Brandeis (4-8, 0-1 UAA) on Sunday afternoon.

Senior guard Jake Fenlon broke the school record for career three-pointers last Saturday at Washington-St. Louis. Fenlon made five from deep to give him 207, besting the previous mark of 205 held by Jesse Meyer (2003-07). The senior's 53 three-pointers this season currently ranks sixth in NCAA Division III.


Indoor Track & Field

UChicago kicks off its competitive schedule on Saturday afternoon by hosting the Phoenix Invitational at Henry Crown Field House.

The 2017 season accomplishments included six All-Americans, 18 national qualifiers and 14 UAA event titles. Senior Khia Kurtenbach was a two-time All-American in the indoor 3,000 meters and indoor 5,000 meters.
