In Samples's debut campaign with the Maroons in 2006-07, he and Head Coach Mike McGrath were honored as the University Athletic Association Coaching Staff of the Year. Under McGrath and Samples, Chicago won a share of the UAA title and earned an at-large bid to the NCAA Division III tournament before finishing the year with a 20-6 overall record. Prior to his arrival at Chicago, Samples spent five years as an assistant coach at Southwestern University, a member of the NCAA Division III Southern Collegiate Athletic Conference. During his tenure at Southwestern the Pirates produced a record of 84-49, including a 48-26 mark in SCAC play. In 2005-06, Southwestern notched its fourth consecutive winning campaign with a 19-8 record. A 2001 graduate of the University of Dallas with a bachelor's degree in history, Samples was a four-year basketball letter winner. He was a three-time American Southwest Conference All-Academic selection as well as an All-ASC honoree. |
