ST. PETER, Minn. -- Trailing 2-1 at the conclusion of doubles play, the University of Chicago men's tennis team rallied for a 5-2 win over Grinnell College in second round of the NCAA Division III Championship Saturday afternoon at Gustavus Adolphus College.
Chicago (17-4) dropped two of the three doubles matches, with its victory coming from junior Troy Brinker (Granger, Ind./ Penn) and freshman Neil Karandikar (Princeton, N.J./ Princeton) at No. 2 (8-6).
Juan Carlos Perez and Dmitriy Glumov won 8-4 at No. 1 doubles for Grinnell (23-8), while Ishan Bhadkamkar and Martin Dluhos posted an 8-4 decision at No. 4.
The Maroons then swept the four completed singles matches.
After junior Jan Stefanski (Falls Church, Va./ Washington International), freshman Alex Golovin (Round Lake, Ill./ Mundelein), and Brinker won in straight sets, sophomore Harrison Abrams (Villanova, Pa./ Harriton) (pictured) clinched the match with a 7-6 (6), 6-1 decision at No. 6.
Making its second NCAA tournament appearance overall and first since 2005, Chicago advanced to the regional championship to be held Sunday against Trinity (Texas) University. The Tigers edged host Gustavus Adolphus 5-3 in Saturday's other second round contest.
