Chicago Captures UAA Title

NEW YORK -- Senior heavyweight Ryan Hatten (Florissant, Mo./ McCleur North) won the decisive bout as the University of Chicago wrestling team won its third consecutive University Athletic Association championship Saturday at New York University.

Chicago and NYU both defeated Case Western Reserve University in the day's first two bouts to set up the title match between the Maroons and Violets.

Freshman Jake Schramm (Darien, Ill./ Hinsdale South) gave the Maroons an early lead with a major decision at 125 pounds.

NYU won the next two bouts before Chicago answered with a 3-2 win by freshman Ryan Hoyt (North Olmstead, Ohio/ St. Ignatius) at 149 and a forfeit victory at 157 to take a 13-9 lead in the match.

NYU then swept the next three bouts to regain the lead 19-13, but freshman Jeff Tyburski (Grosse Ile, Mich./ Grosse Ile) (pictured) kept the Maroons alive with a 6-5 win at 197 pounds. Tyburski was chosen as the UAA Rookie of the Year.

In the day's final bout, Hatten posted a 14-4 major decision to give the Maroons the one-point victory and their 15th UAA title in 24 years. With the win, Hatten captured his fourth career UAA heavyweight title.

Chicago won seven of the nine contested bouts, including four wins by fall, en route to a 40-8 victory over Case in the opening contest. NYU then handed the Spartans a 30-14 setback.

Sophomore James Layton (Chesterfield, Mo./ DeSmet Jesuit), who won by fall against Case, joined Schramm, Hatten, and Tyburski on the All-Association Team.

Chicago, which finished the dual meet portion of its season with a 7-8 record, returns to action at the Great Lakes Regional at Lakeland College on Saturday, Feb. 26.
