CLAREMONT, Calif. -- The University of Chicago defeated Denison University 5-0 in the quarterfinals of the 2011 NCAA Division III Women's Tennis Championship Tuesday afternoon at Claremont-Mudd-Scripps Colleges.
The victory sends the Maroons (20-3) into the national semifinals for the third time in as many seasons where they will face three-time defending NCAA champion, Williams College. The Ephs (20-3) blanked host Claremont-Mudd-Scripps 5-0 in quarterfinal play Tuesday.
Chicago swept the doubles competition, getting wins from senior Chrissy Hu (Palo Alto, Calif./ Palo Alto) and junior Kendra Higgins (Vero Beach, Fla./ Vero Beach) at No. 1 (8-3), junior Carmen Vaca Guzman (Wyoming, Mich./ Grandville) and sophomore Linden Li (Great Falls, Va./ Langley) at No. 2 (8-1), and juniors Aswini Krishnan (Markham, Ontario/ Markham) and Jennifer Kung (Sunnyvale, Calif./ Homestead) at No. 3 (8-5).
A 6-4, 6-1 win from Krishnan (pictured) at No. 6 singles gave the Maroons a 4-0 lead, before Vaca Guzman ended the match with a 6-2, 7-5 decision at No. 3. Vaca Guzman has won the clinching match in all three of Chicago's NCAA postseason victories this season.
Chicago defeated Williams 6-3 at Emory University's Fab Five Tournament back on Mar. 25. In last year's NCAA semifinals, the Ephs edged Chicago 5-4.
Emory (22-4) and Amherst College (19-2) also won in Tuesday's quarterfinal action.
Denison ended its season at 18-5.
