Sept. 14, 2011 - Sport Clubs
UChicago Crew Club to Travel to Paris

CHICAGO -- The University of Chicago Crew Club will participate in La 25ème Traversée de Paris (The 25th Crossing of Paris) on Sunday, Sept. 25 as part of a joint effort with The Paris Committee of the Chicago Sister Cities International Program and the Aviron Marne & Joinville Rowing Club based in Joinville-le-Pont, France.

An annual event in France that welcomes boats from 25 countries, La 25ème Traversée de Paris offers its participants the extraordinary opportunity to travel through the regions of the Hauts-de-Seine and Paris, covering a distance of 34 km (21+ miles) on the River Seine and discovering the Eiffel Tower, the Louvre and Notre Dame along the way.

Occurring only one day a year, La 25ème Traversée de Paris will end with a festive celebration marking the close of this 25th anniversary.

"Our crew club is looking forward to representing not only the University but the city and the country in what appears to be a singular annual event," said Director of Athletics Tom Weingartner. "Moreover, I look forward to a long and fruitful relationship and am eager to explore the possibility of sending other teams to our sister cities."

The crew club's trip marks its first overseas excursion. Since 1997, 10 varsity teams have visited 14 nations on four continents in what is a unique commitment to international travel and competition for UChicago varsity teams.

The University of Chicago Crew Club opens its 2011 regular season at the Head of the Charles Regatta in the Boston area on Oct. 22-23.
