Matt Johnson Named Academic All-American

CHICAGO -- University of Chicago senior Matt Johnson (Ann Arbor, Mich./ Pioneer) has been named to the 2012 Capital One Academic All-America NCAA Division III Men’s Basketball Team, as selected by the College Sports Information Directors of America (CoSIDA).

A Second Team Academic All-America selection, Johnson carries a 3.56 grade point average as a law, letters, and society major. He is also a three-time University Athletic Association All-Academic Recognition Award recipient.

Entering the final week of the season, Johnson is the leading scorer in the UAA with 20.6 points per game. He has garnered UAA Athlete of the Week accolades on three occasions and was chosen to the D3hoops.com Team of the Week in late January.

Johnson scored a school and UAA record 49 points in the Maroons' 103-102 win over Emory University on Jan. 27. His game-winning 3-point shot was featured on ESPN SportsCenter's Top 10 Plays of the Night.

Johnson has been active in community service throughout his career at UChicago, having participated in the National Association of Basketball Coaches' (NABC) Dream to Read program aimed at improving youth literacy, as well as in the American Cancer Society's Relay for Life. He recently accepted a position with Teach for America.

Chicago closes out its 2011-12 campaign Saturday at 3 p.m. when it entertains UAA rival Washington University.
