ST. LOUIS -- On the opening day of the University Athletic Association Volleyball Round Robin at Washington (Mo.) University, the 16th-ranked University of Chicago split a pair of five-set matches, falling to fourth-ranked Emory University before defeating Case Western Reserve University.
The Maroons led Emory (18-1 overall, 1-0 UAA) two sets to one before the Eagles rallied to win 25-21, 20-25, 18-25, 25-16, 15-8.
Senior outside hitter Isis Smalls (Humble, Texas/ Atascocita) (pictured) and sophomore outside hitter Morgan Clark (Purcellville, Va./ Loudon Valley) each hit 11 kills for Chicago, while junior libero Samantha Brown (Louisville, Ky./ Mercy) and freshman libero Eirene Kim (La Canada, Calif./ La Canada) contributed 29 and 24 digs, repsectively.
Smalls (15) and Clark (14) then combined for 29 of the team's 60 kills as the Maroons rallied for a 26-24, 20-25, 24-26, 25-22, 15-11 win over Case (12-5, 1-1). Brown (28 digs) and Kim (20) led the Maroons defensively. Junior middle blocker Katie Trela (Glencoe, Ill./ Regina Dominican) was credited with three block solos and four block assists.
UAA Round Robin action continues Sunday as the Maroons (17-2, 1-1) take on the University of Rochester at 10 a.m.
