CHICAGO -- University of Chicago senior Taylor Simpson (Lee's Summit, Mo./ Lee's Summit) has been selected to the 2012 Capital One Academic All-America NCAA Division III Women’s Basketball Team, as chosen by the College Sports Information Directors of America (CoSIDA).
A Third Team Academic All-America selection, Simpson holds a 3.81 grade point average as a visual arts and pre-med major. She has also garnered University Athletic Association All-Academic Recognition accolades each of the past three years.
Simpson ranks among the UAA leaders in scoring (4th, 13.0), rebounding (3rd, 8.3), field goal percentage (2nd, .574), and free throw percentage (6th, .735). She has scored double figures in 18 of 24 games with four double-doubles. A Preseason All-American and last year's UAA Player of the Year, Simpson has been selected to the D3hoops.com Team of the Week on two occasions this season.
Simpson founded the UChicago chapter of Global Brigades, a student-led global health and sustainable development organization, and prior to her sophomore year helped to procure $200,000 of medicine for medical clinics in Honduras. She spent the summer before her junior year teaching visual arts to children in Varanasi, India, and earlier this year was accepted into the Teach for America program.
One of four undefeated teams in the NCAA Division III, second-ranked Chicago concludes its regular season at home Saturday at 1 p.m. against UAA rival Washington University. As the 2012 UAA champion, Chicago has earned an automatic bid to the NCAA Division III tournament, the bracket for which will be announced Monday afternoon.
