ST. LOUIS, Mo. -- University of Chicago women's tennis player Megan Tang won the 2012 USTA/ITA Central Region Championship on Monday, hosted by Washington University-St. Louis.
Tang defeated No. 5-seed Alex Marcell of Denison University 6-2, 6-3 in the final. The victory capped a 7-0 weekend for Tang, who did not drop a set and won three of the matches by 6-0, 6-0 scores.
"In the title match, Megan came out aggressive," said Head Coach Jay Tee. "She set the tone and made it clear that the match would be played on her terms. She stuck with that game plan all the way through. Megan is very skilled player, but she’s also a fantastic competitor. She hates to lose even a single point, and that mentality helped her win the closer matches. She just didn’t give an inch."
Tee also praised his team's effort from the entire competition, as four Maroons reached the quarterfinals in singles play.
"A lot of people thought we weren’t supposed to be this good after last year’s talented class graduated," Tee said. "But we showed that we’re still the best team in the region. If the other teams want to claim the top spot, they’ll have to beat us because we won’t beat ourselves."
