Two Maroons Compete on Final Day of NCAA Track Championship

St. Paul, Minn. (May 25, 2002) -- University of Chicago senior Jerome Tharaud (Bozeman, Mont./Bozeman) and sophomore Adeoye Mabogunje (Tamuning, Guam/St. John's) competed on the third and final day of the 2002 NCAA Division III Men's Outdoor Track & Field Championship Friday at Macalester College. Tharaud finished in 14th place in the 5,000-meter run with a time of 15:39.66. Mabogunje placed 11th in the high jump competition with a leap of 2.01 meters.


Tharaud, Mabogunje Compete at NCAA Division III Track Championship

St. Paul, Minn. (May 24, 2002) -- University of Chicago senior Jerome Tharaud (Bozeman, Mont./Bozeman) and sophomore Adeoye Mabogunje (Tamuning, Guam/St. John's) competed on the second day of the 2002 NCAA Division III Men's Outdoor Track & Field Championship Friday at Macalester College. Tharaud finished in 15th place in the steeplechase with a time of 9:35.77 Competing in the triple jump, Mabogunje reached a distance of 14.17 meters in the preliminary heat, but did not advance to the finals.


Patrick Sullivan Competes in 1,500-Meter Run at NCAA Division III Championship

St. Paul, Minn. (May 23, 2002) -- University of Chicago sophomore Patrick Sullivan (Wilmette, Ill./Loyola Academy) competed in the 1,500-meter run on the first day of the 2002 NCAA Division III Men's Outdoor Track & Field Championship Thursday at Macalester College. Sullivan posted a time of 3:58.95 in the preliminary heat, but did not advance to Saturday's finals.


Jerome Tharaud Named to
Academic All-District Track Team

Chicago (May 23, 2002) -- University of Chicago senior Jerome Tharaud (Bozeman, Mont./Bozeman) was selected to the 2002 Verizon College Division Academic All-District Five Team for men's cross country and track & field.  Tharaud, who carries a 3.89 grade point average in English and political science, qualified for the NCAA Division III Championships in indoor and outdoor track & field in 2002. 


Former All-American Rusty Loyd to Join Men's Basketball Staff

Chicago (May 22, 2002) -- University of Chicago Director of Athletics Tom Weingartner announced today that Rusty Loyd has been appointed assistant men's basketball coach. Loyd, who spent the past two seasons as a graduate assistant coach at Lewis University, enjoyed an outstanding playing career at Chicago from 1994-98. He was a three-time All-University Athletic Association selection and a two-time All-Midwest Region pick. As a senior, he was named an All-American by Basketball Times after guiding the Maroons to their second straight UAA title and NCAA Division III sweet sixteen appearance.


Order of the C Announces 2001-02 Awards

Chicago (May 22, 2002) -- Thirteen University of Chicago male student-athletes were recognized Tuesday night as the Order of the C held its 99th annual awards banquet. Senior men's soccer player Pat Barry (Rochester, N.Y./Brighton) received the Amos Alonzo Stagg Medal, which is presented to the outstanding senior athlete for athletic performance and ability, leadership, character, contribution to the team’s success, and scholarship. 


Loni Jenkins Receives
Arthur Ashe Sports Scholar Award

Chicago (May 17, 2002) -- University of Chicago junior women's soccer player Loni Jenkins (Avondale, Ga./Dunwoody) received an Arthur Ashe Jr. Sports Scholar Award, presented by Black Issues in Higher Education. The Arthur Ashe Jr. Sports Scholar Awards recognize undergraduate students of color who exemplify excellence in academics, athletics, and community service.


Kelly Ostler Named All-American

Chicago (May 16, 2002) -- University of Chicago senior softball player Kelly Ostler (Oak Park, Ill./Fenwick) was named to the 2002 NCAA Division III All-America Team by the National Fastpitch Coaches Association (NFCA). A third team All-America selection for the second straight year, Ostler was was 11-7 with a 0.66 earned run average with 180 strikeouts in 126.2 innings. She posted eight shutouts and allowed an opponent batting average of .152. Ostler also batted .389 with 12 runs scored and 11 runs batted in.


Women's Athletic Association Announces 2001-02 Awards

Chicago (May 15, 2002) -- Thirteen University of Chicago female student-athletes were recognized Tuesday night as the Women's Athletic Association held its annual awards banquet. Senior softball player Kelly Ostler (Oak Park, Ill./Fenwick) received the Gertrude Dudley Medal, which is presented to the outstanding senior athlete for leadership and skill in women's athletics.


Leo Kocher Honored by IWCOA

Chicago (May 1, 2002) -- University of Chicago Head Wrestling Coach Leo Kocher was recently named Man of the Year by the Illinois Wrestling Coaches and Officials Association (IWCOA). Kocher has developed a nationally-competitive wrestling program during his 22-year tenure at Chicago. During his career, he has coached 19 All-Americans, including a pair of NCAA Division III champions. He has guided Chicago to four top-15 team finishes at the NCAA III Championship, and this past season he led the Maroons to their eighth University Athletic Association crown.
