Maroons Upset #8 Carthage

Chicago -- Senior first baseman Justin Garrett's (Columbus, Ind./ East) sacrifice fly in the bottom of the sixth inning broke a 6-6 tie as the University of Chicago baseball team defeated eighth-ranked Carthage College 8-6 Wednesday at J. Kyle Anderson Field.

Chicago (12-14) trailed 6-5 entering the bottom of the sixth inning. Senior shortstop Steve Ruh (Northbrook, Ill./ Glenbrook North) doubled with one out and eventually scored on a bases-loaded walk to senior center Frank Brown (Chicago Heights, Ill./ DeLaSalle). Garrett then delivered a sacrifice fly, which plated senior left fielder Mike Costello (Orland Park, Ill./ Marist), who had drawn a walk earlier in the inning.

Chicago took a 2-0 lead in the second inning when Brown doubled in a run and later scored on a fielder's choice. An RBI single off the bat of junior designated hitter Ryan Denton (Worth, Ill./ Marist) in the fourth inning gave the Maroons a 3-0 lead.

Ruh and Denton extended their respective hitting streaks to 13 and 11 games.

Carthage (24-9) got on the board with a pair of runs in the top of the fifth, but the Maroons answered with two runs in their half of the inning, which featured an RBI double by Garrett.

The Redmen scored four times in the top of the sixth to go up 6-5, but again Chicago responded with a two-run output in the bottom of the frame.

Chicago, which extended its winning streak to a season-best six games, added an insurance run in the seventh on a run-scoring single by Ruh.

Junior pitcher Dan Yeksigian (Downers Grove, Ill./ Benet) pitched the final three and two-thirds innings to earn the win. Now 5-3 on the year, Yeksigian held the Redmen scoreless while fanning five.

Mike Huven collected three RBIs for Carthage.
