Maroons Sweep Edgewood

Verona, Wis. -- Junior pitcher Dan Yeksigian (Downers Grove, Ill./ Benet) notched his sixth consecutive victory and senior hurler Matt Altomare (Philadelphia, Pa./ St. Joseph's) won his third straight decision as the University of Chicago baseball team took both halves of a twinbill Saturday at Edgewood College by scores of 5-1 and 6-3.

In game one, Altomare (4-3) scattered four hits and allowed just one run in six and one-third innings of work. Senior shortstop Steve Ruh (Northbrook, Ill./ Glenbrook North) went 3-for-4 with two runs and an RBI before recording the final two outs of the contest in relief of Altomare.

Ruh belted his 15th double of the season -- one shy of the Chicago record -- in the top of the first inning and later scored on a base hit off the bat of senior left fielder Mike Costello (Orland Park, Ill./ Marist). Costello and junior designated hitter Ryan Denton (Worth, Ill./ Marist) each went 2-for-4 in the game one.

Yeksigian (7-3) allowed nine hits and three runs while fanning five in game two as the Maroons completed the doubleheader sweep, evening their overall record at 16-16 with their 10th win in the last 12 outings.

Ruh, whose 18-game hitting streak ended when he was hitless in four at-bats in Saturday's nightcap, pitched the final one and one-third innings to notch his first save of the year.

Costello had two hits in three at-bats, including his second home run of the season.

Edgewood fell to 24-16.
