Yeksigian Throws No-Hitter as Maroons Sweep

Chicago -- After earning the save in game one, junior pitcher Dan Yeksigian (Downers Grove, Ill./ Benet Academy) threw a no-hitter in game two as the University of Chicago baseball team swept both halves of a twinbill against Rose-Hulman Institute of Technology Saturday at J. Kyle Anderson Field by scores of 13-12 and 6-0.

En route to the no-hitter, Yeksigian struck out 10 batters while walking five. He fanned Rose-Hulman's Gabe Focke for the game's final out. With his second shutout of the year, Yeksigian won his seventh straight decision and improved his record to 8-3.

The Maroons had just six hits in the 6-0 game two victory, but took advantage of 10 walks and four Rose-Hulman errors. Freshman second baseman Tony Zitek (Tampa, Fla./ Plant) collected a pair of RBIs in the win.

Senior shortstop Steve Ruh (Northbrook, Ill./ Glenbrook North) tied a school record when he clubbed his 16th double of the season in the third inning.

Yeksigian struck out the final Rose-Hulman batter in the opening game to earn the save and preserve Chicago's 13-12 comeback victory.

The Maroons trailed 6-0 and 9-4 before exploding for eight runs -- all after two outs -- in the bottom of the sixth inning. Senior center fielder Frank Brown (Chicago Heights, Ill./ DeLaSalle) delivered the key blow with a three-run triple which gave the Maroons the lead for good at 11-9.

Brown had four RBIs in the contest, while junior designated hitter Ryan Denton (Worth, Ill./ Marist) went 3-for-5 with three runs scored.

Chicago wrapped up its 2005 campaign with an 18-17 record, giving the Maroons their third straight winning season and ninth in the last 11 years under Head Coach Brian Baldea.

Rose-Hulman ended its season with a 23-18 mark.
