For Immediate Release Maroons Defeat Wheaton 11-6 Wheaton, Ill. -- Senior first baseman Justin Garrett (Columbus, Ind./ East) drove in the go-ahead run with a double in the top of the sixth inning as the University of Chicago baseball team defeated host Wheaton (Ill.) College 11-6 on Tuesday. Garrett's run-scoring double gave the Maroons (7-14) a 6-5 lead. Senior left fielder Mike Costello (Orland Park, Ill./ Marist) and junior catcher Chris Kocinski (Antioch, Ill./ Antioch) also collected RBIs as Chicago tallied four times in the sixth inning. Garrett and senior third baseman T.J. Rajcevich (Waukegan, Ill./ Waukegan) each had three hits on the day, while Kocinski and senior shortstop Steve Ruh (Northbrook, Ill./ Glenbrook North) drove in a pair of runs. Freshman second baseman Tony Zitek (Tampa, Fla./ Plant) belted his first career home run, a solo blast to left center field in the top of the ninth. Junior right-hander Dan Yeksigian (Downers Grove, Ill./ Benet) picked up the win after allowing just one run in four and one-third innings of relief. He yielded only one hit while fanning six as he evened his season record at 3-3. Brandon Sharpe homered and drove in three runs for Wheaton (9-18). |
