Baseball Ends Season With 7-6 Loss
Chicago -- Nick Troy's run-scoring double in the top of the fifth inning broke a 4-4 tie and propelled visiting Chicago State University to a 7-6 win over the University of Chicago baseball team Thursday in the Maroons' season finale.
Chicago State (5-28) took a 2-0 lead on solo homers by John Jensen in the second inning and David Blomberg in the third. Chicago (14-14) answered with three runs in the bottom half of the third to go up 3-2. Senior first baseman Joe Russo (Brooklyn, N.Y./Xaverian) provided the go-ahead RBI. He was 3-for-5 with two RBIs on the day.
The Cougars scored twice in the top of the fourth to take a 4-3 lead, but Chicago evened the score at 4-4 on a two-out RBI double off the bat of sophomore second baseman Brent Consiglio (Orchard Lake, Mich./Cranbrook) in the bottom of the fourth.
After Troy's double gave the Cougars a 5-4 lead in the top of the fifth, Chicago State added runs in the sixth and seventh to build a 7-4 advantage. An RBI single by Russo made the score 7-5 in the bottom of the seventh.
Chicago rallied in the bottom of the ninth. A base hit by sophomore third baseman Nick Kocinski (Antioch, Ill./Antioch) scored senior right fielder Charlie Galbraith (Phoenix, Ariz./Brophy) to make the score 7-6, but the Maroons stranded the tying runner on second base to end the game.
Kocinski finished the day 3-for-4, while senior designated hitter Brett Nunziata (Weston, Conn./Weston) went 2-for-5.
Freshman pitcher Matt Kotheimer (Libertyville, Ill./Libertyville) took the loss in relief. Kotheimer (1-1) was one of five Chicago hurlers on the afternoon.
