Baseball Splits Doubleheader with Thomas More
Chicago -- Sophomore right-hander Adam Alson (Rensselaer, Ind./Central) allowed three hits in six and one-third innings as the University of Chicago edged Thomas More College 2-1 in the second game of a doubleheader Saturday afternoon at Chicago's J. Kyle Anderson Field.
Alson, now 4-0 on the season, took a shutout into the seventh and final inning, before leaving the game after a base hit by Thomas More right fielder Nick Pieczonka put runners at first and second with one out.
Sophomore Nick Kocinski (Antioch, Ill./Antioch) then moved from third base to relieve Alson. He allowed a run-scoring single with two outs, but retired the game's final batter to notch his third save of the year.
Senior left fielder Brian Gutbrod (Simpsonville, S.C./Mauldin) provided the offense, driving in a run in the bottom of the third and scoring the eventual winning run in the sixth.
In game one, Thomas More hurler Adam Freeman threw a three-hitter as the Saints defeated the Maroons 5-1. Freeman did not allow a hit until senior designated hitter Brett Nunziata's (Weston, Conn./Weston) two-out single in the bottom of the fifth inning.
TMC center fielder Kevin Brown went 2-for-5 with a run and an RBI, and shortstop Scott Vetter went 2-for-4 with two stolen bases and a pair of runs scored.
Chicago scored its lone run in the fifth inning on a two-out RBI double by freshman center fielder Frank Brown (Chicago Heights, Ill./De La Salle).
The loss snapped the Maroons' 13-game home winning streak.
Senior first baseman Joe Russo (Brooklyn, N.Y./Xaverian) extended his hitting streak to 13 games in game one, but went 0-for-2 in the nightcap.
