Track & Field Turns in Solid Performances at Chicagolands
Naperville, Ill. -- The University of Chicago men's and women's outdoor track & field teams competed at the 2002 Chicagoland Championships Saturday at North Central College. The men's squad finished sixth among 15 institutions, while the women were 11th of 15 teams.
In the men's competition, three Chicago athletes posted first-place finishes, led by senior Jerome Tharaud (Bozeman, Mont./Bozeman), who won the steeplechase with a time of 9:17.99, which is the third-fastest time in the NCAA Division III to date.
Sophomores Adeoye Mabogunje (Tamuning, Guam/St. John's) and Patrick Sullivan (Wilmette, Ill./Loyola Academy) also took top honors in their respective events, Mabogunje in the high jump (2.01 m) and Sullivan in the 1,500-meter run (3:57.99).
On the women's side, sophomore Valerie Anderson (Timonium, Md./Dulaney) turned in the Maroons' top performance with a school-record heave of 44.54 meters in the hammer throw, which was good for second place.
In addition, junior Diane Valos (Chicago, Ill./Trinity) tied for third place in the pole vault (2.75 m), while freshman Erin Steiner (Western Springs, Ill./Lyons Township) finished fourth in the 5,000-meter run (18:19.0).
