Chicago Nets Four UAA Athletes of the Week

Chicago -- Four University of Chicago winter and spring sport athletes have been selected as the University Athletic Association Athletes of the Week in their respective sports, the conference announced today.

In men's tennis, junior Ward Bortz (Brookfield, Wis./ Marquette) and freshman Sasha Deriy (Bolingbrook, Ill./ IMSA) swept three contests at first doubles and went 3-0 at first and second singles, respectively, as the Maroons won three matches on the road this past Friday and Saturday. Bortz collected his second UAA Athlete of the Week award of the season and his career, while Deriy was recognized for the first time.

In women's indoor track & field, freshman Myra Collins (Converse, Texas/ Antonian Prep) won the long jump competition at the Feb. 18 Chicagoland Championships with an NCAA Division III provisional-qualifying distance of 5.59 meters. She garnered her first-ever UAA Athlete of the Week award.

In wrestling, senior Sean Barnes (Wheaton, Ill./ Wheaton-Warrenville South) won the heavyweight title at the NCAA Division III Great Lakes Regional Championship, thus earning an opportunity to participate in the Division III national meet in March. Barnes won four matches on the day to improve his season record to 30-8. He received UAA weekly accolades for the second time this year and the third time during his career.
