Univ. of Chicago Trio Named UAA Athletes of the Week
Chicago -- Three University of Chicago athletes were selected the University Athletic Association Athletes of the Week in their respective sports, the UAA announced today. Junior Laura Hebel (Fort Wayne, Ind./Concordia Lutheran) was recognized in women's basketball, along with junior Andy Bugajski (Chicago, Ill./De La Salle) in wrestling, and sophomore Tom Haxton (Seattle, Wash./Shorecrest) in men's indoor track & field.
Hebel was the Maroons' high scorer in a pair of UAA contests last week. In a 54-53 win over Carnegie Mellon University on Jan. 25, she scored a game-high 16 points and grabbed eight rebounds. She then tallied 16 points, including the go-ahead basket in the game's final three minutes, as Chicago edged the University of Rochester, 51-47 on Jan. 27.
Bugajski was named the Most Outstanding Wrestler as Chicago won the 2002 UAA Championship on Jan. 26. Competing at 149 pounds, Bugajski defeated Case Western Reserve University's Zak Kallai 13-8. Kallai entered the championship ranked third in the NCAA Division III individual rankings.
Haxton surpassed the NCAA Division III provisional qualifying mark in the 5,000-meter run at the University of Wisconsin-Whitewater Invitational on Jan. 26 with a time of 14:41.8.
