Chicago -- Three University of Chicago athletes were named the University Athletic Association Athletes of the Week in their respective sports, the UAA announced today.
Senior Brian Gutbrod (Simpsonville, S.C./Mauldin) was honored as the offensive player of the week in football, and sophomore midfielder Eugene Sung (Manlius, N.Y./Fayetteville-Manlius) and sophomore netminder Micah Prochaska (Ann Arbor, Mich./Pioneer) were selected the top offensive and defensive weekly performers, respectively, in men's soccer.
Gutbrod caught 12 passes for 141 yards and two touchdowns as the Maroons defeated Bethany College 31-17 on Nov. 3. He scored on a nine-yard pass reception to give Chicago a 10-0 lead in the final minute of the second half, then scored on a five-yard pass play late in the third quarter to give the Maroons a 24-7 edge.
Sung scored his first collegiate goal in a 1-0 victory over Centre College in the regular season finale on Nov. 3. The win guaranteed the Maroons their second NCAA Division III playoff berth and a the right to host second and third round action in the Great Lakes Regional.
Prochaska registered back-to-back shutout victories as the Maroons completed the 2001 regular season with a 14-3 record and an NCAA Division III playoff berth. Prochaska made four saves in a 2-0 win at Wheaton College on Oct. 31, then stopped four shots in a 1-0 victory at Centre on Nov. 3, setting the school record for most regular-season wins by a goalkeeper (11).
