Former Chicago All-American Rusty Loyd
to Join Men's Basketball Coaching Staff
Chicago -- University of Chicago Director of Athletics Tom Weingartner announced today that Rusty Loyd has been appointed assistant men's basketball coach. Loyd joins the staff of Head Coach Mike McGrath, who begins his fourth season in 2002-03.
Loyd, who was an All-American point guard at Chicago in 1997-98, spent the past two seasons as a graduate assistant coach at Lewis University. In 2001-02, Lewis won the Great Lakes Valley Conference tournament title and advanced to the NCAA Division II sweet sixteen with a record of 25-7.
From 1998-2000, Loyd served as an aide on the staff at Earlham College. During Loyd's tenure, Earlham posted its first winning conference record in 25 years and its first-ever conference tournament victory.
Loyd enjoyed an outstanding playing career at Chicago from 1994-98. He was a three-time All-University Athletic Association selection and a two-time All-Midwest Region pick. As a senior, he was named an All-American by Basketball Times after guiding the Maroons to their second straight UAA title and NCAA Division III sweet sixteen appearance. During Loyd's career, Chicago compiled a record of 76-29, including a 47-8 mark his junior and senior campaigns. He finished his career as Chicago's all-time leader in assists (484) and steals (170).
Loyd earned a bachelor's degree in psychology from Chicago and is currently pursuing a master's degree in leadership studies at Lewis. He replaces Rob Passage, who last month accepted the head coaching position at Kalamazoo College.
In three seasons under McGrath, Chicago is 62-18 with a pair of UAA championships and an NCAA Division III sweet sixteen and elite eight appearance.
