For Immediate Release #20 Chicago Sweeps IWU, Extends Win Streak to 12 Chicago -- Junior first baseman Rachel Cohen (Barrington, Ill./ Barrington) drove in four runs on the day as the 20th-ranked University of Chicago softball team swept a doubleheader from Illinois Wesleyan University Sunday at Stagg Field. With the two victories, Chicago extended its winning streak to 12 games and raised its overall record to 16-1. Cohen belted a two-run home run -- her first of the year -- to cap a three-run opening inning as the Maroons downed the Titans 3-1 in game one. Junior pitcher Hannah Roberts (Scottsville, Ky./ Allen County-Scottsville) raised her record to 10-0 as she scattered five hits and fanned 14. A home run by Illinois Wesleyan's Colleen Schuster in the sixth inning snapped Roberts' consecutive scoreless innings streak at 55.0 frames. In the second game, an RBI double off the bat of freshman left fielder Dominique Marshall (Westerville, Ohio/ Columbus Girls) in the bottom of the third inning provided the eventual winning run as the Maroons edged the Titans 3-2. Cohen had a two-run single in the bottom of the first as Chicago took an early 2-1 lead. Sophomore pitcher Petra Wade (Batavia, Ill./ Batavia) pitched five-plus innings for the win (6-1) before sophomore left-hander Lauren Hula (East Lansing, Mich./ East Lansing) pitched the final two frames for her first save of the year. Illinois Wesleyan, which began the day with a four-game winning streak, fell to 11-6 on the season. |
